Applied Knowledge: The first level of ACCA

The Applied Knowledge Level, also known as Level 1, is the first step in the journey to becoming a globally recognised Chartered Certified Accountant. This foundational level equips students with essential financial and management accounting skills, ensuring a strong base for advanced studies and professional growth. It covers key subjects such as Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), and Financial Accounting (FA), which provide a fundamental understanding of business operations, financial reporting, and cost management. Completing this level enables students to progress to the Applied Skills Level, where they build on technical knowledge and develop analytical expertise essential for real world financial decision making.

Subject Overview

Financial Accounting is concerned with the preparation and publication of financial statements in adherence to the relevant international standards. It examines the principles of the recording of transactions, the concepts of assets and liabilities, and the provision of financial reporting to different stakeholders. This subject also emphasizes the importance of accuracy, consistency, and transparency in financial reporting to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, it introduces students to fundamental accounting concepts such as double-entry bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, and the interpretation of financial data for decision making.

Management Accounting aspect of the ACCA qualification focuses on budgeting, cost control, and performance measurement in order to facilitate better business decisions. This area of study helps in developing skills that are essential in looking ahead and managing resources while integrating financial information into the overall strategy of the organization. It also covers various costing techniques, to help businesses analyze profitability and efficiency. Students learn how to apply financial data in decision making, enabling organizations to optimize operations and achieve long term financial sustainability.

Business and Technology is aimed at teaching the fundamental business concepts, such as types of organizations and their environments, and the effect of technology on their operations. It makes students appreciate the operational dynamics of a business. This subject also explores corporate governance, business ethics, and the role of leadership in shaping organizational success. Additionally, students gain insights into how digital transformation and emerging technologies influence business decision making and competitive advantage.

Examinations

Exam Format: Computer-based with interactive questions, including multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and drop-down menus.

Exam Duration: 2 hours for each paper

Passing Criteria: A minimum score of 50% to pass each paper.

Exam Session: ACCA offers flexible exam scheduling in the Applied Knowledge Level, allowing you to book exams anytime throughout the year at your convenience. Simply choose your preferred date and take the exam when you’re ready.

Admission Eligibility

**For those who don’t meet the minimum requirements, they can still apply through the FIA route.**

There are two routes to enter into ACCA Knowledge level. One is ACCA route and another is Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) Route. For those joining ACCA after grade 12, ACCA route is recommended and those joining before grade 12, FIA route is recommended.

ACCA Route

Grade XII: 3 passes from the Grade XII in 6 separate subjects including Maths and English

A Levels: Two passes grades A-E.

FIA Route

No formal qualifications needed.
Direct ACCA progression with exemptions after completion
